Best Hybrid Wedges

While many golfers have come to appreciate the numerous benefits hybrids have to offer, they are generally only used as a substitute for long irons or fairway woods. The short game is an often neglected part of the game and hybrids can help with that too. That’s why we thought we’d enlighten you about how to invest in the best hybrid wedges for you, so you really can take advantage of having one in your bag. Let’s get stuck in.

Reflection Time

Many people believe their short game and approach shots are OK, but do a careful analysis of your scorecards over the past 10 games or so. Most people will discover that they waste an unnecessary amount of strokes in this area. That will not even show the full picture as while you might be finding the green most of the time, the ball is so far from the pin that a single put would be a miracle.

The truth is, while shorter shots are not quite as intimidating as teeing off or hitting the second shot on a long par 5, they are still not easy. All too often we find ourselves wasting shots hitting too high or low on the ball, hooking or slicing, or getting the distance way off.

Any of these can cause you to waste one or even two strokes. If you add these up, you will realize that an improvement in your short game could make a significant improvement to your score.

How Can a Hybrid Wedge Help?

Hybrid wedges provide the same benefits on chipping or bunker shots as they do for longer shots. The design and weighting of the hybrid make them infinitely more forgiving and consistent. They also deal with the surface better, be it rough, rocky, or sand. Once you are used to it, a soft landing close to the pin should be achievable most times you are within 100 yards.

Best Hybrid Wedge

For a number of reasons, the big manufacturers are not focusing on hybrid wedges just yet. Apart from full sets of hybrids, the hybrid wedges on the market are mostly made by smaller independent companies.

While they will take a bit of getting used to and might not be for everyone, many people have found a huge relief from short game hybrids. The two main companies offering hybrid wedges are Black Magic Golf and The Perfect Club. Let’s take a look at what they have.

Black Magic Golf

These guys market short game hybrids under the HWedge name. Whether your lie is in the rough or sand, the HWedge will give you an easy high launch for a soft landing on the green, close to the pin. The design is particularly useful for those tricky long bunker shots. The hybrid glides through the sand and you can play a normal shot with confidence.

The control is great and the launch spins high so you can play accurate shots from anywhere under 150 yards. There are three options, 50, 55, or 60-degree lofts.

The Perfect Club

The folks at The Perfect Club understand the pain and frustration many golfers experience with their short game. Their short game hybrids are available as lob or sand wedges and work wonderfully from any lie within 75 yards of the green.

They are highly forgiving and play well out of sand or deep rough. The sole and weighting are optimized to get you out of trouble, even on shorter shots.

Landings are soft and should set you up for an easy putt to finish the hole. They have three options available:

  • Sand and Lob Wedge 58-degree Graphite Shaft
  • Sand and Lob Wedge 58-degree Steel Shaft
  • Short Game Bundle – Sand and Lob Wedge and Chipper

These are proving to be very popular with many players enjoying the easy lofting, forgiving hybrid wedges.

The Bottom Line

If landing in the bunker fills you with dread or your approach shots are not consistently landing where you would like, consider the hybrid wedge. When every stroke counts, saving just 2 or 3 in a round can make all the difference. Let the club do the hard work and improve your accuracy, setting up those easy puts.
